Latin America: History, Politics, and U.S. Policy

The second edition of thius informative text, formerly titled Neighbors in Turmoil: Latin America, is fully updated to address the question of U.S. policy in apost-Cold War world. Cockcroft introduces students to modern Latin American politics, history, culture, and geography. Three distinct perspectives are presented on a number of issues: the official U.S. position; typical nationalist responses from Latin American countries; and different views expressed by U.S. citizens or groups opposed to the official U.S. position. Trends and themes include the impact of revolutions, nationalism, the role of elite families, export commodities, human rights issues, and unequal distribution of wealth.

The Squandering of America: How the Failure of Our Politics Undermines Our Prosperity

The incomes of most Americans today are static or declining. Tens of millions of workers are newly vulnerable to layoffs and outsourcing. Health care and retirement burdens are increasingly being shifted from employers to individuals. Two-income families find they are working longer hours for lower wages, with decreased social support. As wealth has become more concentrated, the economy has become more recklessly speculative, jeopardizing not only the prospects of ordinary Americans, but the solvency of the entire system. What links these trends, writes Robert Kuttner in this provocative, engaging, and necessary book, is the consolidation of political and economic power by a narrow elite, who blocks the ability of government to restore broad prosperity to the majority of citizens.

Kuttnerâ€"one of our most lucid economic criticsâ€"explores the roots of these problems and outlines a persuasive, bold alternative. In BusinessWeek, The Boston Globe, and The American Prospect, he has established himself as a prophetic voice connecting economics and politics. Here he demonstrates how our economy has fallen hostage to a casino of financial speculation, creating instability as well as inequality. He debunks alarmist claims about supposed economic hazards, such as Social Security and Medicare, and exposes the genuine dangers: hedge funds and private equity run amok, sub-prime lenders, Wall Street middlemen, and America’s dependence on foreign central banks. He describes how globalization of commerce has been used by business less to promote free trade than to escape the balanced regulation that delivered widespread abundance in the decades after World War II.

While our financial security has weakened under President George W. Bush, Kuttner also faults many Democrats for failing to offer compelling alternatives. Now, with financial markets in crisis and public opinion supporting a more active role for government, he offers a new model of managed capitalism that can deliver security and opportunity, and rekindle democracy as a check on concentrated wealth.

Here is a passionate, articulate naming of the problem and a call for reform. The Squandering of America sets out a path for reclaiming our democratic politicsâ€"and our prosperity.

Lines of Attack raises broad questions about the nature of political caricature by juxtaposing two distinct historical moments in the development of the medium: its emergence in France in the 1830s, as artists including Honoré-Victorin Daumier ridiculed King Louis-Philippe, and its recent history during the presidencies of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The contributors assess the state of caricature at a moment when traditional outlets for the political cartoonist’s artâ€"particularly the daily newspaperâ€"face an uncertain economic future, and technological change is radically transforming the media landscape that has sustained journalistic caricature for almost two centuries. Along with the cartoons featured in the book (most of which appear in color), the essays illuminate the development of caricature as a journalistic form, its changing visual languages, and its effectiveness in commenting on politics and instigating debate and dissent. Published in connection with the exhibition of the same name at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Lines of Attack features not only the satirical art of Daumier and his contemporaries, but also images by some of the most provocative political cartoonists working in the United States and Great Britain today: artists including Steve Bell, Steve Brodner, Joe Ciardiello, Pat Oliphant, Gerald Scarfe, Edward Sorel, Tom Tomorrow, and Garry Trudeau.

The Biology of Vines

The climbing habit in plants has apparently evolved numerous times. Species that climb are well represented in habitats ranging from tropical rain forests through temperate forests to semi-deserts. The Biology of Vines, first published in 1991, is a treatment of what is known about climbing plants, written by a group of experts and covering topics ranging from the biomechanics of twining to silvicultural methods for controlling vine infestations. Also included are detailed accounts of climbing plant evolution, stem anatomy and function, climbing mechanics, carbon and water relations, reproductive ecology, the role of vines in forest communities and their economic importance. The chapters are based on research on herbaceous vines and woody climbers (lianas) in both temperate and tropical zones, deserts and rain-forests and Old and New World areas. Much remains to be learned about the biology of these plants, but this volume provides a substantial foundation upon which further research can be based.
