How fast did arrows travel in ancient times?

I know modern bows can shoot arrows at 100mph. But what about the long bows of medieval times and the ancient Greeks, etc. Were the ancient bows weaker and therefore shot arrows at a slower speed? I

'm wondering because some stories I've read described ancient warriors catching arrows shot at them. At 100mph, that would be unlikely. At 50mph, that would be less unlikely. Thanks.

90 to100 mph is a good speed. Not until the invention of the compound bow and man-made, lighter-than-wood arrows did speeds increase dramatically surpassing the 100mph speed. Actually the speed is/was very dependent on the size and weight and design of the arrow as well as the criteria for the bow so there can be quite a variation. To "catch" an arrow in flight is quite a feat regardless.
